Allan Horsfall (1927-2012)
A pioneering campaigner for gay rights in the UK and neighbour (coming from the next Lancashire mining village to mine, Atherton). When Allan went public as a founding member of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, the press expected all hell to break loose in his tightly knit working class home town - in fact the opposite happened, his local community supported him in his down to earth bid for social justice.
Allan raised his head above the parapet at a time when the 'crime' of being gay carried a potential sentence of life imprisonment in the UK. We shouldn't underestimate his bravery and contribution in laying the groundwork for todays more relaxed times.
